Project Brief

This project was a request to close up a loft closet cavity by designing and building an enclosure with a 3-way sliding door. The only main challenge was that the ceiling wasn't flat, it had an angled vaulted surface.

Step By Step

How the enclosure came together

  1. We took measurements of the open area.
  2. We presented a 3D render so the client could see what the enclosure would look like post construction.
  3. We made a run to Home Depot to pick up the needed material. The sliding door function comes as a kit found at Home Depot.
  4. We framed out the open space. Since the ceiling was angled and not flat, we cut a piece of wood to create an acute angled triangle shim that would position the top 2x4 in a flat position.
  5. We added plywood to the base of the loft cavity top to reinforce the drywall's integrity to support heavy items or use of the crawl space.
  6. We cut the facade molding trim pieces.
  7. We painted all molding trim and framing.
  8. We installed the sliding door tracks and placed the doors.
  9. We painted the doors and added cut-outs for the slide finger-handle notches.
  10. VOILA!

Project complete. This took approximately 6 to 7 hours from start to finish, including the run to Home Depot to source material and supplies.
